What is the  visa lottery?
The visa lottery is the process whereby an individual  applies to obtain one of the 55,000. immigrant visas available during a fiscal  year. Winning one of these immigrant visas would give the individual and his or her spouse and minor children status as a permanent resident in the United States.

What is the application period?
Each year the application window is usualy a 60 day period starting in October or November.  Please click here to go to the Department of State website. Look for Diversity Visa Program.

Who qualifies for the visa lottery?
These immigrant visas are usually given to the citizens of all countries except for citizens of the following countries:

Canada

Jamaica

China

Mexico

Colombia

Pakistan

Dominican Republic

Philippines

El Salvador

South Korea

Haiti

United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland)

India

Vietnam


What are the requirements to apply for the visa lottery?
The applicant must have been born in a qualifying country.

The applicant must have a high school education or two years of work experience within the past five years in an occupation requiring at least two years of training or experience.

The applicant  must submit an application within the required time.
